Today we were all getting our feet wet and figuring out what the Mayan Adventure is. Each day will look something like this.
10:30 Arrive and Teams
10:45 Story
11:00 Design Journal
11:20 Build it!
11:50 Tutorial
12:30 Lunch
1:00 Program It!
2:15 Break
2:30 Test It!
3:00 Let the Games Begin
3:20 Story and Discuss
3:30 Scores and Goodbye!
After splitting into teams and talking about the Mayan Adventure and FLL this year we read the story. Evan is helping his Uncle with an archeological find. Luckily Evan brought his NXT to Guatemala with him! Today he had to build a robot to fit through a small tunnel and trigger a pressure plate to disable the trap and open the tomb door. Our teams had to each build a robot that could do this.
Today's main focus was using a loop in a program. After building their robots (each had very unique designs) they hopped into the programming and testing of their creations. The score layout for today's challenge is as follows:
5 - For working robot
5 - Use loop in program
5 - Comments to explain program
5 - For robot that sits on pressure plate for 10 seconds
5 - For robot that returns on it's own.
10 - Teamwork

10 - Teamwork
Team 1 Team 1 lost a team mate early on and had some building issues with their initial robot having them recreate a few times. In the end though they had a sound robot. They were nailing their programming to start with and their robot was performing brilliantly. It did get a bit of stage fright during competition for an unknown reason and took quite a few tries to complete the mission (and a touch penalty). 3 - For working robot 5 - Use loop in program 3.5 - Comments to explain program 5 - For robot that sits on pressure plate for 10 seconds 0- For robot that returns on it's own. 6 - Teamwork Total = 22.5 | Team 2 Team 2 got quite a head start as they built a solid robot right off the get go allowing them to start programming early. Lots of great teamwork continued through the programming and testing phase, all working together to trouble shoot and brainstorm. In test runs their robot was pretty consistent but come challenge time was a lot less accurate. Team 2 really showed great teamwork right from the beginning. 3 - For working robot 5 - Use loop in program 5 - Comments to explain program 5 - For robot that sits on pressure plate for 10 seconds 0- For robot that returns on it's own. 9 - Teamwork 3 - FLL Core Value Coopertition Bonus Total = 30 | The A Team Team 3's robot looked a little strange and we were all uncertain of it's stability. Their programming seemed to be a bit uncertain too but Team 3 was the surprise team as they came through and won the challenge on the first try earning them 5 bonus points. 5 - For working robot 5 - Use loop in program 1 - Comments to explain program 5 - For robot that sits on pressure plate for 10 seconds 0 - For robot that returns on it's own. 7 - Teamwork 5 - Bonus for challenge completion 1st go! Total = 28 |
Way to go everyone! Wow you guys amazed me today! You all really stepped up to the task and learned some new skills. You all had such great patience as you fine tuned and problem solved. Looking forward to Day 2!
